Editorial Reviews:

The simple pleasure of watching a living car squirt oil in a villain's face just never goes away. Disney, in their effort to revitalize the Herbie franchise, has made the wise choice of not trying too hard--aside from a small bit of skateboarding action, just about every element of Herbie: Fully Loaded would fit right into the 1963 original (groovily titled The Love Bug) or its various sequels. Maggie Peyton (Lindsay Lohan, the fiery-tressed starlet of Mean Girls and Freaky Friday) wants to join her family's dynasty of race car drivers, but her father (Michael Keaton, Batman Returns) worries that she'll get hurt. Instead, as a college graduation gift, he buys her a junked-out Volkswagen Beetle--which turns out to be Herbie, a car with a mind of its own. Soon Maggie and Herbie are racing against an arrogant racing champion (Matt Dillon, Crash, There's Something About Mary) and duking it out with monster trucks, eventually hoping her father's heart will change. Herbie: Fully Loaded is formulaic fluff, but executed with cheerful enthusiasm; everyone involved has clearly embraced the mix of slapstick hijinks and light family drama. There's even a handful of cameos by NASCAR drivers. The result is every bit as ridiculous yet entertaining as its forebears. --Bret Fetzer

1 out of 5 stars This is both original and good. Unfortunately, what is original is not good, and what is good is not original.   September 4, 2010
Wes Prang
This reboot tries hard to copy the originals. In my opinion, it fails miserably.

Herbie - Fully Loaded has more plot holes than Star Trek. Peyton's dad should have at least grounded her for lying to him about racing. Instead all he does is walk away. There is no way a professional NASCAR driver would race an amateur in a VW Beetle. There is no way a demolition derby would let someone run out onto the track during a match. There is no way NASCAR would let a VW Beetle race there. Especially when it's a soft-top with no number on top (as per their regulations).

But I think the biggest plot hole in this movie is that in this world of professional racing, no one recognized Herbie, even tho they found him in a shed full of racing trophies.

The parts of the movie that aren't just bad are merely Disney's attempt to reheat famous scenes from old Herbie movies (The Love Bug, Herbie Rides Again, Herbie Goes Bananas, Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo) in the hope that we'll start watching again. The problem I have (in addition to the badly written, warmed-over plot) is that Maggie Peyton did not have to work her way up to the top, as did Jim Douglas.

But that's the trouble with Disney for the last 15 years. Teens are shown that they deserve to be at the top without doing anything to earn it themselves. Peyton's dad buys her the car. Then Peyton gets to race against the top dog in NASCAR and win, even though Herbie is still fresh from the junkyard and is clearly illegal to drive.

Then they clean Herbie up and slap on some cool stuff, as if it's supposed to improve his performance. But the whole point of Herbie movies is that Herbie performs better than souped up race cars because he has a heart. In adding all that stuff to Herbie, they pull his heart out - and mine too.

If this isn't enough, Disney continues to beat us over the head with their "teens deserve to win without putting any effort into it" attitude by letting Maggie Peyton run out into a life-threatening demolition derby to get Herbie back, and then drive off with him without having to pay or sign any papers (Titles of Ownership are not transferred like sticks of gum).

Then her Dad's pit crew comes and fixes Herbie good as new in a single night. Finally, Peyton gets to race in the Indy 500 without even having to qualify. Someone (her brother) does that for her, too. All Maggie Peyton does throughout the entire movie is sit behind the wheel screaming while others do everything for her.

Did this make me want to watch new movies from Disney? No. It made me long for the originals. Disney needs to go back to yesteryear - not to copy it, but to recapture the magic they've lost by using no-talent bimbos in pale imitations of their original works.

5 out of 5 stars Enjoyable Family Movie!   September 11, 2009

Having loved the Herbie movies as young child, I picked up this movie, thinking it would be fun to watch it with my 5 year old daughter. And I was right! We had a great time, watching this movie. I love that the bad guy was "bad", but not scary. Sometimes, my daughter gets scared watching other Disney movies with evil witches, etc. because they are truly scary - not in this movie. I enjoyed watching it as much as she did. I remember thinking after the movie was over, how refreshing it was to watch a movie that actually was a "G" in rating. Fun movie to watch!

5 out of 5 stars Nice family film   August 10, 2009
Khaled Altaher (Riyadh, NA Saudi Arabia)
Lindsey Lohan is a naturally born car racer, who received a special birthday gift from her father, which is the car "Herbie". Now Herbie is a funny, emotional, and intelligent car. It can basically do the driving for you and communicate with you too! Lindsey uses Herbie to defeat the racing champion, and she is crowned champion afterwards, making herself and her family very proud.

Now the Herbie idea is quite old. It's an old movie made in the 70s I guess and this movie is based on it. However the idea is not impossible! A car that makes the driving decisions, not the driver, is not impossible in our time. Same way we have today auto pilots, we could have soon auto driver. However the exaggerated part is the emotional one. Like the part where Herbie was attracted to another Beatles car. That last scene was cute anf funny, but obviously impossible!

The idea of an intelligent car could be a nice horror movie too. An evil haunted car that kills whoever drives it! Nice huh?
